An Old Interview Has Resurfaced In Which A Shady Jennifer Lopez Gave Her Thoughts On Some Famous Actresses
Published on:
It looks like that green Versace dress isn’t the only scandalous thing from Jennifer Lopez’s past that was dragged back out this month after spending two decades tucked away in storage. And I was deliberate with my word choice there, because there’s a whole lot of old dragging courtesy of Jenny from the Block.
Last week, Wirecutter editor Jason Chen dug up an old Movieline interview from 1998 and posted it to Twitter. And it’s gaining some traction, because it’s 100000% more exciting and juicy than a Movieline interview ought to be. In 1998, Jennifer had a few big movies under her belt. She had done Selena and Anaconda, and she was just coming off playing Karen Sisco in Out Of Sight. This was one year before On the 6 and the green dress at the Grammys. So essentially, we’re dealing with Actress Jennifer Lopez and not Singer/Dancer/Diddy’s Girlfriend JLo.
Jennifer had risen up to what she described in 1998 article as being “the bottom of the A-list of actresses,” so Movieline decided to ask her thoughts on some of the other A-list actresses she was now competing with for movie roles. Jennifer takes many A-list actresses down to their kitten heels (as was the style at the time). There’s no “great gowns, beautiful gowns” subtlety here. Here’s what 1998 Jennifer had to say about her following peers.
Salma Hayek: “We’re in two different realms. She’s a sexy bombshell and those are the kinds of roles she does. I do all kinds of different things. It makes me laugh when she says she got offered Selena, which was an outright lie. If that’s what she does to get herself publicity, then that’s her thing. Columbia offered me the choice of Fools Rush In or Anaconda, but I chose the fun B-movie because the Fools script wasn’t strong enough.”
Cameron Diaz: “A lucky model who’s been given a lot of opportunities I just wish she would have done more with. She’s beautiful and has a great presence, though, and in My Best Friend’s Wedding, I thought, ‘When directed, she can be good.’”
Gwyneth Paltrow: “Tell me what she’s been in? I swear to God, I don’t remember anything she was in. Some people get hot by association. I heard more about her and Brad Pitt than I ever heard about her work.”
Winona Ryder: “I was never a big fan of hers. In Hollywood she’s revered, she gets nominated for Oscars, but I’ve never heard anyone in the public or among my friends say ‘Oh, I love her.’ She’s cute and talented, though, and I’d like her just for looking like my older sister, Leslie.”
Madonna: “Do I think she’s a great performer? Yeah. Do I think she’s a great actress? No. Acting is what I do, so I’m harder on people when they say, ‘Oh, I can do that – I can act.’ I’m like, ‘Hey, don’t spit on my craft.’”
Claire Danes: “A good actress. Her emotional and inner life are available to her, which is a good start. But I feel like I see a lot of the same thing with every character she does. She’s not that way in U-Turn, though.”
That’s not to say Jennifer Lopez was all shady and negative. She did have some very nice things to say about A-list actress Jennifer Lopez:
“I’m the best. I feel I can do anything – any kind of role. I’m fearless. I work really hard. I’ll just get better as I go along because I’m open to getting better. If you have the goods, there’s nothing to be afraid of. If somebody doesn’t have the goods, they’re insecure. I don’t have that problem. I’m not the best actress that ever lived, but I know I’m pretty good.”
See? 1998 Jenny could be generous with praise.
Who knew that Gwyneth Paltrow was the Jennifer Lopez to Jennifer Lopez’s Mariah Carey? “Tell me what she’s been in” is the original “I don’t know her.” And to be fair to Gwyneth, 1998 was the year she appeared in Shakespeare in Love and ended up with a Best Actress Oscar a couple months later, which makes Jennifer’s read even more brutal.
Speaking of Oscars, Jennifer is honestly so lucky that this interview resurfaced now, and not a couple months earlier, or last year, or even ten years ago. Because Jennifer is currently getting Oscar buzz for her performance in Hustlers. And I’m pretty sure that had this interview popped back up earlier, a whole lot of people would be laughing like, “Girl! The star of Gigli, Monster-In-Law, and The Boy Next Door is in no position to be calling anyone a shit actress!”
