Netflix for the last several years has been dominating the holiday season. Every December, there’s something – or multiple somethings – streaming on Netflix that go viral, that no one can stop talking about. And it’s not necessarily conventional “holiday” content either. Remember Making a Murderer? I feel like we all binged it during the holiday season in 2015 and it was the conversation for a couple of weeks after. Other examples include Bright, Bird Box, and last year a lot of people got into Don’t F-ck with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, The Witcher, John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Brunch, Crash Landing On You, and several comedy specials from Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, and Ronny Chieng.
This year, give it up, because Netflix will own your holidays once again. Shondaland’s Bridgerton is coming on Christmas Day but before that, I have another priority:
Selena: The Series!
Christian Serratos stars as the legend Selena Quintanilla and the first full trailer was just released after a teaser a couple of weeks ago. I was already crying with the teaser. “Como La Flor!” This song!

Now with the trailer, I’m full-out sobbing.
I watched the movie, starring Jennifer Lopez, over and over again when it came out in 1997. I could not get enough of the music (“Bidi Bidi Bom Bom!”), I could not get enough of the costumes. That cow print outfit! Two hours was inadequate. So now, with the blessing of her family, we’re getting a whole series covering Selena’s life from childhood to her death.
It’s been 25 years since she died, at 23, already a major star for millions in the Latin community and just as she was about to blow up internationally. What I like already about this series, at least going by the trailer, is that there’s more time to explore the stories of the people in Selena’s life, like her sister and best friend Suzette, the first female drummer in Tejano music history, played by Noemi Gonzalez. Selena was the first Latin artist to top the Billboard 200. She did it alongside Suzette who was also a history-maker. I am so ready to spend time with them, their family, their memories…during the holiday season. We need it!
Until then, let’s go back to some vintage Selena footage. She was an electrifying performer. This will never not be platinum, no matter how much time passes.
